Amir Khan defeated Chris Algieri by unanimous decision in a crowd-pleasing back-and-forth tussle live on Spike TV.

Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center played host to the latest Premier Boxing Champions show in front of a live crowd of 7,300. The judges scored the fight 115-113, 117-111 and 117-11 for Khan.

The fight seemed closer than the 117-111 cards, but Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) did manage pull away after feeling some tense moments early in the fight.

Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) came out swinging and Khan had no answer for Alrgieri’s right hand. Khan was able to use his footwork to make the necessary adjustments and land flush combinations to damage Algieri’s left eye. Though his eye didn’t close up as it did against Ruslan Provodnikov, Algieri’s eye became worse off as the fight went on.

In the opening round Algieri landed his best punch of the night and it wobbled Khan much to the chagrin of the thousands of Khan’s fans in attendance. Khan recovered quickly and started using his footwork to create distance between himself and Algieri’s right hand.

It was the Algieri right hand that may have won some of the early rounds and garnered some respect from Khan. In the second round, Khan came over the top of Algieri’s right hand to land a stinging jab-right combination to back Algieri up. Khan continued to land big shots in the third round and Algieri although trying to chase Khan down was unable to cut the ring off the more experienced Khan.

Algieri came back with a good round four, taking the fight to Khan and again landing his right hand at will. Algieri in this round found a way to penetrate Khan’s defense and the Algieri supporters in the crowd tried to give their man more power to come forward. After performing well in this round, Algieri wasn’t able to string together combinations to make a difference for himself.

Algieri started off the fifth round landing good body shots on Khan, but the quicker Khan found a way to use his legs again to not allow Algieri to find the sweet spot.

By the sixth round Khan started to control the fight, landing big right hands to move Algieri backwards. Khan then landed a big left hook to stun Algieri and send him backwards. Khan followed that left hook up with yet another one to get an enormous roar out of his supporters.

Khan hurt Algieri in the tenth round with very fast combinations leaving Algieri to cover up and try to move away.

Khan tried to play it safe in the twelfth and final round, but Algieri sensing he may need a stoppage to win came out swinging for the fences. Khan was able to hold just enough to thwart any momentum from Algieri and stay clear of danger.

Now the talk will begin on whether or not Khan did enough to garner the Floyd Mayweather fight.

“Of course we all know I want Floyd Mayweather. but when you want something so much and you have waited for something so long it can set you back,” Khan said in reference to fighting Mayweather. “Tonight I really did not want to look past Chris.”

Khan was very complimentary of Algieri’s effort tonight.

“I give Chris a lot of credit tonight,” Khan said. “He came forward more than I thought he would. Maybe if he fought this way against Pacquiao he would have beat him.”
