On Saturday, August 13, 2016, former champion Antonio Margarito returned to the ring with a 10-round split decision victory against Ramon Alvarez in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico.

The scheduled 10-rounder was televised on beIN Sports in the U.S.

Alvarez, the older brother of Canelo Alvarez, had a good start in the early rounds. The 30-year-old native of Mexico looked quicker and stronger than Margarito, but, as the rounds progressed, it became clear that he had neither Margarito’s conditioning nor his skill to be able to win most of the rounds.

Indeed, as he began to establish his jab and distance, Margarito, landed his right hands with more consistency. The 38-year-old native of Mexico is nowhere near the fighter he used to be, but he had just enough to score a knockdown in Round 8 and to win most of the rounds.

One judge scored the fight 95-94 for Alvarez, while two others scored it 97-92 for Margarito.

Incidentally, Canelo was at ringside for the night, but let’s hope that a fight with Margarito isn’t even remotely being considered.
