On Friday, December 23, 2016, Light Heavyweight knockout artist Artur Beterbiev (11-0, 11 KOs) scored a first-round knockout victory against Isidro Prieto (26-2-3, 22 KOs) at the Lac Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
Beterbiev made quick work of Prieto, a 30-year-old native of Paraguay who had never been knocked out in his career.
Prieto walked confidently to the center of the ring and applied pressure to Beterbiev. Prieto is a veteran, so perhaps his plan was to make Beterbiev uncomfortable and to test him.
However, a short, counter right hand quickly put Prieto’s plan to a screeching halt. Instead of walking Beterbiev down, Prieto now found himself at the receiving end of hard left and right hands.
Prieto seemed to have been recovering fairly well, but with less than a minute left in the round, Beterbiev landed hard flurry that quickly sent Prieto down.
Prieto was unable to make the ten-count.
Beterbiev is a 31-year-old native of Russia who is quickly making his case for a world title shot after now winning 11 fights by knockout since making his debut in June of 2013.
Before debuting as a professional, Beterbiev had an extensive amateur career. Beterbiev competed in 2008 Olympic games in the Light Heavyweight division, losing to Zhang Xiaoping in the second round.
Beterbiev competed in the 2012 Olympics, but in the Heavyweight division. This time, however, he lost to Oleksandr Usik, who is currently the WBO Cruiserweight title.
The question now remains: How long until Beterbiev gets a title shot?
