In a year that’s been seemingly dominated by Showtime and Golden Boy Promotions, HBO and Top Rank look to gain some traction in the boxing rat race as they bring fans an exciting split-site doubleheader on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
First up is Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KOs) who takes on Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs) in a Light Heavyweight matchup from Montreal.
The heavy-handed Stevenson is looking to continue his positive momentum after knocking out former Light Heavyweight champion, Chad Dawson.
Cloud is looking to get back on track in this bout after suffering the first defeat of his career against the legendary Bernard Hopkins.
In the main event, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. faces Bryan Vera in a bout that has sparked a lot of controversy due to Jr.’s inability to make the original contracted weight of 168 pounds. The two camps agreed late this week to set a new weight limit of 173 pounds.
The bout marks Chavez Jr.’s first return to the ring since suffering the first loss of his career against Sergio Martinez in 2012.
HBO’s World Championship Boxing telecast begins at 10:15 pm, EST.
