Before the Middleweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez can be officially announced, one thing needs to be cleared up: a rematch clause.

According to an article by ESPNDeportes.com’s Salvador Rodriguez, Oscar De La Hoya says the deal has been stalled due to Cotto’s legal advisor, Gaby Peñagarícano.

The issue at hand is not whether a rematch will take place–as both sides are willing to have one–but it is about how much money the winner will take if a rematch happens.

“In a talk with special members of the media, De La Hoya revealed that Peñagarícano wants an unacceptable percentage for Cotto in a rematch because he feels Canelo’s the one who brings people to the arena and will sell the pay-per-view, which could reach 1.5 million homes as long as it is promoted well,” said Rodriguez.

“De La Hoya indicated that Cotto’s lawyer is the only one who doesn’t want to make the fight official, which would take place on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also said that in any case, they should close the deal and leave the possibility of a rematch for later,” said Rodriguez.

De La Hoya believes that Cotto’s lawyer is the only one stalling the fight and that his promotion, Golden Boy Promotions, Cotto’s promoter, Roc Nation Sports, and the fighters themselves are all ready to make the fight official.

However, boxing fans should not worry. De La Hoya also said that they can settle the issue after the fight.

“If we can’t come to an agreement, the rematch will be taken off. That’s not a problem, we can negotiate after the fight in good faith,” said De La Hoya.

What do you think of De La Hoya’s statements? If the fight is close, would you want to see a rematch?

Also, should the winner take more money in a rematch, regardless of who is selling more tickets?
