On Saturday, November 15, 2014, Cristian Mijares (50-8-2, 25 KOs) took on Lester Medrano (14-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10 round Featherweight bout.

The bout was held in Plaza de Toros, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico and shown live on Fox Deportes.

After losing a one-sided 12 round decision to Leo Santa Cruz in March of this year, Mijares returned with a victory in June against a lesser-known opponent.

Medrano was another mediocre opponent who wasn’t supposed to give Mijares much trouble. But, Mijares was made to work throughout the fight as Medrano gave as good as he got.

In Round 4, both men unleashed some big hooks which landed flush. Medrano was willing to take one to give one and repeatedly showed that he was not their to lay down.

But, the fight seemed to change pace a bit when the lopsided open scoring numbers were read in Round 5. What seemed to be an even fight was announced as 40-36–or a clean sweep–in favor of Mijares.

Still, Mijares was forced to dig in and earn the victory against the hard-nosed Nicaraguan Medrano. The veteran Mijares now sets his sites on WBC Champion, Jhonny Gonzalez who recently dispensed of another Mexican veteran, Jorge Arce.
