On Saturday, March 4, 2017, Erickson Lubin (18-0, 13 KOs) blasted Jorge Cota (25-2, 22 KOs) with an overhand left to win by fourth-round TKO at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The scheduled 10-round Super Welterweight fight, which was the co-main event to the Welterweight unification fight between Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman, was televised on CBS in the U.S.

Lubin, a 21-year-old native of Orlando, Florida, earned himself a shot at the 154-pound WBC strap currently held by Jermell Charlo.

Cota, a 29-year-old native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico sought to earn the shot for himself, but his wide punches and his awkward stance made him an easy target for Lubin’s shorter, crisper, and harder shots.

It was a left hand in at 1:25 of Round 4 at the produced the TKO stoppage. Though Cota made the count, he was clearly unable to continue.

“I baited him with the jab. I knew he was going to come with the big shots early. I put a few tricks on him, I landed that overhand right and it was night-night,” said Lubin, who intelligently put his hands down to allow Cota to engage with wide shots.

“I put my hands down to bait him in, I did a squat and then it was night-night. I was ready to follow-up with a right but he was already out,” said Lubin.
