On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Francisco Vargas (20-0-2, 17 KOs) and Orlando Salido Orlando Salido (42-13-4, 29 KOs) fought to a majority draw in a twelve-round Super Featherweight fight for Vargas’s WBC title at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA.

The veritable war between two Mexican fighters headlined a two-fight telecast of HBO Boxing After Dark in the U.S.

Vargas, of Mexico City, Mexico, got off to a good start by outboxing Salido in the first round. Vargas even seemed to have hurt Salido as well.

However, by Round 2, the exchanges began, and Salido, a native of Sonora, Mexico engaged with Vargas in two-to-toe action.

In Round 3 and 4, however, Salido began landing hard shots that even caused swelling above Vargas’s right eye.

Both men went back and forth, but as the rounds progressed, Salido seemed to be landing the harder shots–and more consistently as well.

In the final round, Salido topped off his performance with a hard flurry that hurt Vargas. Salido, we can imagine, must have felt that he had secured a victory.

“It was a complicated fight like I expected, a very difficult fight from beginning to end with a lot of action,” said Salido.

“It was a great spectacle for all the fans. They got what they wanted; they wanted to see blood and they saw blood,” said Salido, who felt he won by a slight margin and would welcome a rematch.

“I feel really good about this decision,” said Vargas.

“I knew coming in that I was going to be facing a very tough opponent; however I didn’t expect for him to head butt me and give me so many cuts to the face,” said Vargas.

Because the fight was exciting to watch, it may warrant a rematch. Would you like to see it?
