Fighting for family and country, Gary Antuanne Russell made a successful debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he defeated American-born Haitian boxer, Richardson Hitchins, by unanimous decision on Wednesday evening.

Russell, one of six brother’s named Gary Russell, became the first of the four fighting Gary’s to score an Olympic victory.

Russell’s older brother’s include WBC Featherweight champion, Gary Russell Jr., and undefeated prospect, Gary Antonio Russell.

Though he won by unanimous decision, Russell’s performance was sloppy at times, which is something that his father was vocal about after the fight.

“He said, ‘Man, look, don’t get too excited. It’s the first night,”‘ said Russell. “It’s a little sloppy, so we need to talk (per the AP).”

Hitchins had minimal success during the three-round bout and was unable to defeat Russell for the third time.

Team USA is now an impressive 6-1 in the Rio Olympics, with Nico Hernandez shining through and already guaranteeing himself at least a Bronze medal.
