On September 10, 2016, Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) scored a fifth-round TKO victory against Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) at the 02 Arena in London, United Kingdom.

The fight was televised via HBO in the United States.

Golovkin, a 34-year-old of Kazakhstan, went for broke in the opening round. Golovkin did not show the boxing skills we’ve seen him use against tougher opponents.

Instead, Golovkin swung with wide hooks and overhand rights instead of calmly boxing with the use of his jab. Although Brook was almost dropped in Round 1, he showed his toughness and his chin in the following rounds.

In Round 2, Brook landed a hard uppercut that began a series of combinations to the chin of Golovkin. Though he was hit with a lot punches, Golovkin was not hurt.

By Round 3 and 4, Brook was slowly being broken down. Though he would land an occasional counter shot, Golovkin pushed forward and landed harder and harder shots.

By Round 5, Brook was a veritable punching bag, and although he could have continued, his corner decided to throw in the towel before suffering more punishment.

In his post-fight interview, Golovkin stated that he did not feel Brook’s power, and perhaps his utter disregard for his power is what motivated him to fight so recklessly.

Brook, however, said that he would have wanted to continue fighting, suggesting that it is better for a fighter to go out on one’s shield.

What did you think of Golovkin’s performance? Will Brook take over the 154-pound division?
