On Saturday, November 12, 2016, Jarrett Hurd (18-0, 12 KOs) scored a sixth-round TKO victory against former world-title challenger, Jo Jo Dan (35-3, 18 KOs) at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The scheduled 12-round fight was the co-main event of a 10-round fight between Danny Garcia and Samuel Vargas. The fight was televised via PBC on Spike TV in the United States.

Before the fight, Hurd was coming off a 10th-round stoppage victory against Carlos Molina. Hurd had been slowly rising in the 154-pound rankings by using his large frame to overpower his opponents with crisp, hard shots.

Dan was a former Welterweight contender whose most recent loss was against Kell Brook for the IBF Welterweight title in March of 2015.

Dan lost to Brook via fourth-round knockout, and he had just moved to 154 pounds in the following fight against Rafal Jackiewicz in September of 2015.

After a first round in which he took his time to feel Dan out, Hurd began to land hard combination punches in Rounds 2 and 3. Dan was not deterred, and came to fight.

Hurd, a 26-year-old native of Accokeek, Maryland, was clearly the bigger man, and he seemed comfortable using his strength and size to overwhelm Dan with crisp, short and accurate punches.

Every time Dan managed to back Hurd into a corner to land combinations, it seemed as if Dan’s punches had nothing on this. Hurd picked them off easy the way a fighter would when working with a trainer’s mitts.

By Round 5, it was clear that Dan, a 35-year-old native of Romania, was taking too much punishment, and the end was near. After being wobbled by a right hand in Round 6, Dan’s corner put a stop to the fight.

With tonight’s victory, Hurd took another step toward title contention.
