On Monday, February 20, 2017, two-division world champion Canelo Álvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and former WBC Middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) kicked off their four-city international press tour in Mexico City.

The event drew thousands of crazed fans who seemed evenly split for Canelo and Chavez Jr. Canelo and Chavez Jr. engaged in their first of many face offs ahead of their anticipated clash on Cinco De Mayo weekend, Saturday, May 6, 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There was a common theme throughout the presser as multiple members from each respective camp spoke about history and Mexican pride that fuels this matchup.

“Fights between Mexicans are usually the biggest, and I want this fight to be a mark on the legacy that many fights like this have left behind in Mexico’s fight history,” said Canelo.

Chavez Jr., who sat next to his father, discussed the impact of having more than one Mexican legend in his corner.

“With Nacho Beristain in my corner, I have a lot of knowledge on my side. It’s symbolic because he has his name etched as one of the greats, and this is a tribute to him and is a contribution to Mexican boxing,” said Chavez Jr.

Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso acknowledged Nacho for the great work he’s done, but also made mention of the fact that it is now his turn to make history as part of a new generation of trainers.

“Mexico versus Mexico is one of the greatest fights you can see in the world. Nacho has contributed much to boxing, but I am a part of the new generation of trainers. At one point, Nacho was where I am now. We are the new generation, and we are here to make history,” said Reynoso.

Oscar De La Hoya, who knows first hand just how intense a battle of this magnitude can be, also spoke about the importance of Mexican boxing.

“Mexican boxing is the best, and when you have these two hot boxers who want to give the best to the fans, and we couldn’t pass it up,” said De La Hoya.

The fighters will be in New York City on Tuesday as they continue to promote their May 6 pay-per-view fight.
