Mickey Bey Wins IBF Strap in Ugly Fight Against Vazquez

Mickey Bey (21-1-1, 10 KOs) leaped with a sense of surprise when his hand was raised after scoring a split decision victory over Miguel Vazquez (22-5, 18 KOs) to win the IBF Lightweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The twelve-round fight, which was the co-feature of the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana, was hard to watch–not only because of a clash of boxing styles, but because neither fighter was willing to take the risk to make the fight more exciting.

Bey, despite being given the decision, had a lot of trouble closing the distance, as Vasquez’ reach, height and awkward style kept him at a distance for most of the fight.

Bey did not do enough to win the fight and the title, let alone by the 119-109 score one judge, Robert Hoyle, had given him.

Julie Lederman also scored the bout for Bey with a score of 113-115, while Adalaide Byrd scored the same for Vasquez.

Bey, a 27-year-old native of Cleveland, Ohio who is promoted by Mayweather promotions, wins the biggest fight of his career, while Vasquez, a 27-year-old native of Guadalajara, Mexico loses his title in unfortunate fashion after six successful defenses.
