RODRIGUEZ VS SEALS - Eli Baylis Premier Boxing Champions (24)

On Friday, November 13, 2015, Premier Boxing Champions traveled to the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi for another installment of PBC on Spike.

In the main event, Edwin Rodriguez (28-1, 19 KOs) took on Michael Seals (19-1, 14 KOs) in a Light Heavyweight bout that provided numerous knockdowns and plenty of fireworks.

Coming into the bout, Seals was hoping to make a statement against his toughest opponent to date, but things got off to a rocky start for the unbeaten fighter as he was dropped early on. Though it looked like more of slip/push upon review, the referee officially ruled it a knockdown and Seals was hit with some early adversity.

Much to his credit, Seals composed himself and took advantage of a charging Rodriguez who was looking to end the night early. With his back against the ropes, Seals unleashed a vicious straight-right hand that immediately dropped “La Bomba” to the canvas.

Realizing he needed some time to recover from the shot he didn’t see coming, Rodriguez waited until the count of eight to rise to his feet. Towards the end of the first round, Rodriguez and Seals launched right hands almost simultaneously with Seals’ hitting its target first. As the round came to an end, Rodriguez was hit flush on the chin with another big right, causing his hands to uncontrollably flail in the air. It looked like La Bomba wouldn’t make it out of the round, but somehow Rodriguez beat the count and held on to survive a wild first stanza. “He hit me with a really good shot,” said Rodriguez. “I went down but got up like a champion does.” Not only did Rodriguez get up, he came back to drop Seals in Round 2 and take control for the remainder of the fight. Seals was game, but he could not recover from Rodriguez’s offensive onslaught and was eventually stopped at the :24 second mark of Round 3. After the fight, Rodriguez called out more guys than an umpire, expressing his willingness to face the best at Light Heavyweight. “I’m looking at [Adonis] Stevenson, [Andrzej] Fonfara, can’t forget about [Jean] Pascal, [Sergey] Kovalev–all of them. Bring it on, let’s go I’m ready,” said Rodriguez. Seals dropped his first fight as a professional, but certainly gained some fans and should get some more television time in the future. In the co-main event, Fernando Guerrero (28-3, 20 KOs) took on Daniel Souza Santos (14-9, 11 KOs) in a Middleweight bout which was scheduled for eight rounds. The action was measured throughout, but Guerrero controlled the rounds with his power punching, especially turning it on in Round 6 and 7 before the fight was finally called to a halt by the referee at the 1:45 mark of Round 7.

Guerrero has struggled in step-up bouts against the likes of Peter Quillin and David Lemieux, and it’s not a good thing that his biggest statement of the night were his boots, which looked like something out of Chewbacca’s closest, but nevertheless he did score a win and he hopes to build on that momentum.

In the second bout of the PBC broadcast, Bryant Perrella (12-0, 11 KOs) steamrolled his overmatched opponent, Chaquib Fadli (13-6, 7 KOs).

Perrella landed precise shots at will, with hard body blows being the key to victory.

Fadli stumbled around the ring after being hurt early on before the referee stopped the mismatch at 1:30 of Round 1.

In the first televised bout of the evening, Thomas “Top Dog” Williams (19-1, 13 KOs) took on Humberto Savigne (12-3, 9 KOs) in a Light Heavyweight bout. Williams–whose lone career loss came against Gabriel Campillo in August of 2014–was hoping to pick up a necessary victory and keep his name in the mix of 175-pound contenders. Both fighters got off to a quick start, throwing caution to the wind and trading knockdowns in Round 1. In Round 2, Williams took control of the action and scored a second knockdown with some stiff combination punching to the head.

Williams seized the moment as Savigne got up on shaky legs and was battered against the ropes until the referee jumped in to stop the bout.

Williams picked up a much-needed televised victory and will look to score bigger bouts on the PBC platform in the near future.
