Showtime Steps Up with Free Streams for Boxing Fans

Rack this up as a big win for Showtime as they announced on Tuesday morning that they will be live-streaming three fights on their YouTube and Facebook pages.

The first bout will be Carl “The JackalFrampton’s homecoming fight against Andres Gutierrez at SSE Arena in Belfast, which is a WBC Featherweight world title eliminator. That fight will start at approixmately 5:30 pm, EST and is expected to be a “Freed from Desire” frenzy in the stadium as The Jackal looks to land another title shot.

Showtime Sports will then deliver live coverage from Barclays Center in Brooklyn beginning at 7:15 pm, EST with two Showtime Championship Boxing Prelims.

The two-fight live stream will feature former world title challenger Gerald Washington (18-1-1, 12 KOs) against Brooklyn native Jarrell Miller (18-0-1, 16 KOs), plus the U.S. debut of female boxing star and Irish Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Taylor (5-0, 3 KOs). Hall of Famer Barry Tompkins will call the live streaming fights from Brooklyn alongside former world champion Daniel Jacobs.

Washington vs. Miller is a classic Heavyweight clash between two men that will showcase their brute strength and should provide a beef of action. Miller, is a contender in the Heavyweight division and a good outing here could propel to a title shot very soon. While Washington is coming off a good performance against WBC title holder Deontay Wilder last February before being stopped in the fifth round.

It’s great to see Showtime taking advantage of platforms and social media. Whether in the past when they would show undercards on Showtime Extreme before the main card on Showtime started.

With Facebook and YouTube being enormous outlets as they are, hopefully this could start a trend across other networks. I tweeted over last weekend that I’d be “disappointed” if Showtime would not show the Miller-Washington bout on Showtime Extreme or on the undercard of Garcia-Broner.

To get a response from Showtime’s boxing account shows their keeping up with the fans want. It’s a very encouraging sign. We get three fights streamed in the United States thanks to a network keeping afloat.

Rack that W for Showtime.
