5 Fighters That Are Pissing Boxing Fans Off

Historically, boxing is a sport controlled by the fans where the greatest fighters are those who please their fans.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is a young middleweight champion who has defeated numerous hall of fame fighters and will surely be going to the hall of fame at the end of his career. As of the past year or so however, Canelo has found himself drawing the ire of many of his fans.

In boxing, the two biggest names currently are Canelo and Gennady Golovkin. The two middleweight champions have defeated nearly everyone in their path and have taken almost all the middleweight belts available.

The logical thing to do when all belts are shared between two people would be to have a unification bout, right? Apparently, that is not the case with Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions.

Ever since Canelo said, “Like I said in Mexico, ‘we don’t f*** around.’ We don’t come to play in this sport. I fear no one in this sport,” after his fight with Amir Khan, the world has expected more from Canelo than he is willing to give.

Canelo has repeatedly contradicted his own quote by ducking GGG and pushing the fight back further and further. This is not the only reason he frustrates his fans however.

His explanation for avoiding Golovkin was that he was not yet ready and would like to get back up to middleweight comfortably before taking on his hardest hitting opponent ever. This is an acceptable explanation, except Canelo’s actions do not line up with his words.

If what Canelo said were true, he would take on opposition at a higher weight. His last two opponents however have both been either at his weight or forced to move up in weight to fight him.

Canelo is continually losing respect from his fans and will continue to do so until he fights Gennady Golovkin.
