Looking to stay busy in a fight that was originally geared to be a rematch with Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares faced Andres Gutierrez at the StubHub Center in the co-main event on the Saturday, October 14 edition of PBC on Fox.

Mares started off fast in the first round, landing shap combinations to the head of Guiterrez. Before the close of the first round, a few hard left hands forced Guiterrez to fire back in desperation with little effect on Mares.

Mares continued his offensive attack in the second round and opened a cut above the left eye of Guiterrez.

Gutierrez continued to apply pressure, but his face began to show the effect of Mares’ accurate punches. It only seemed a matter of time before Mares would finish Gutierrez. But despite taking a beating, the game Gutierrez kept pressing forward.

Gutierrez was never in the fight and seemed content to go to his corner a bloody mess because he could take the best Mares could dish out. The fight was a highly entertaining, but one-sided beat down.

In the 10th round, referee Jack Reiss took time to have Guiterrez checked by the ring sided physician. The fight was stopped at the advice of the ringside physician due to an accidental headbutt.

The fight went to the scorecares where Mares took home a unanmious decicision 100-90 and 99-91 on two judges’ scorecards.

After the fight Mares was asked about the rematch with Leo Santa-Cruz and he simply replied, “Come March, April, I’m ready!”
