Andre Dirrell started a bit slowly, but finished emphatically in the co-feature tonight on ESPN2. “The Matrix” (God that’s awful) improved his record to 23-1 with 16 KOs by catching massive underdog Nick Brinson with a gorgeous counter left cross in the fourth round and then pummeling him in the corner until the ref stopped the fight.
Dirrell and Brinson both started slowly, with Dirrell landing the occasional left hand and jab while Brinson tried to land combinations. Dirrell switched from southpaw to orthodox occasionally, but was mostly ineffective until that massive punch landed.
Brinson actually had a couple decent moments in the fight, especially at the end of the third round when he snapped Dirrell’s head back with a right hand. He threw combinations and seemed to be gaining confidence, but he ran into an absolutely devastating shot that he couldn’t recover from.
Interestingly, it appeared as though Brinson’s glove touched the canvas after the left hand landed, but the ref steered clear of the action until Brinson was helpless against the ropes.
It’s a nice win for Dirrell, albeit against inferior opposition. The good news is that the talented fighter is finally getting busy again. He can probably make some noise at 168. He badly wants a rematch with Carl Froch, but that seems as unlikely as Froch getting a rematch with Andre Ward.
In the second televised fight of the evening, Dakota “This Is My Porn Name” Dawson got the living piss beaten out of him in about a minute by undefeated (or 8-1, depending on if you’re listening to the fight or watching it on mute) Ahmed “Chestacular” Elbiali.
