Lightweight prospect Andres Cortes (11-0, 6 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact as he defeated Baltimore’s Jahmal Dyer (9-2, 5 KOs) in the ShoBox: The New Generation televised opener on April 5, 2019.
The fight took place at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas and aired live on Showtime.
The contest was a lot more difficult than expected as Dyer was game from the beginning. Both men fought pretty evenly during the first four rounds of the fight. At the end of round 4, Dyer got caught with a shot right at the bell that had him wobbled.
Cortes wanted to close the show in the fifth, but Dyer had other plans as he caught his man with a shot that floored him. Cortes made it back to his feet and did not seem to be seriously hurt.
For the duration of the contest Cortes outboxed his opponent and buzzed him several times. In the end it was Cortes who cruised to unanimous decision. The scores were 78-73, 79-73 and 78-74 all in favor of Cortes.
