WBA Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KOs) retained his title with a first-round TKO of Trent Broadhurst (20-2, 12 KOs) at the Casino De Monte Carlo in Monaco on Saturday.

Bivol dropped Broadhurst with a blistering straight-right hand before referee Howard Foster waved it off as a bloodied Broadhurst laid on the canvas. The bout ended at 2:59, just before the round ended.

“I like the right hand,” said Bivol. “It is very strong. If I can throw a good, strong right hand, I want to develop it further. There’s no limit to how much you can add to that.”

The unbeaten Russian displayed a solid jab, and good power in his right hand. Broadhurst landed a hard right but Bivol seemed unfazed and continued forward. Midway through the round, Bivol pushed Broadhurst and the referee called it a knockdown.

Bivol was last seen destroying former world-title challenger Cedric Agnew in four rounds of the undercard of Andre Ward-Kovalev rematch in June.

The talented 26-year-old rising prospect has now fought three times in 2017 and will look for big championship fights in the future.

“The WBA said that I have to fight the winner of [Sullivan Barrera vs. Felix Valera on November 25] and I am ready for the mandatory defense,” said Bivol. “I believe I can [beat Barrera]. Every time I go into the ring, I believe that I’ll be the winner.”

Bivol said every fighter should think he is the best and he hopes to be No.1 pound-for-pound in the world one day.

“There are many good fighters in the light heavyweight division,” said Bivol. “We will see who will be the best.”
