BOXNATION TRIPLEHEADER SEES MCKENZIE CHALLENGE FOR CRUISERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AS ARGENTINE KNOCKOUT KING MATTHYSSE FACES POSTOL FOR LIGHT-WELTWERWEIGHT BELT
(LONDON, 2 October) – BoxNation will air a stunning tripleheader exclusively live starting tonight with cruiserweight star Ovill McKenzie who makes the trip to Buenos Aires to take on Victor Ramirez for the IBF title in his own backyard.
The Jamaican-born ace will be hoping to upset the odds and claim a remarkable victory over two-time world champion Ramirez after taking the fight at just 11 days notice after Yoan Pablo Hernandez was stripped of the belt.
With a record of 25 wins and 12 losses McKenzie’s road to a world title shot has been a rollercoaster ride but he’s now ready to grab his chance of glory and shock Ramirez, who has a record of 22 wins with just 2 losses.
“I’m just counting down the hours and ready to get in the ring tonight and cause a massive upset,” said the Derby based fighter McKenzie.
“What have I got to lose? Nothing. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got for this one big moment. No one apart from me, my team or my family and friends are giving me a chance. But I’m going to give it my best shot and make Britain and Jamaica proud.
“I’m not worried by the crowd here, I’ve been to more hostile places than this, at the end of the day it’s just me and Ramirez in the ring. He’s a good fighter, but he’s never faced a fighter like me who’s so hungry and determined to win the title at all costs.
“I know I’ve got to go out there and take the fight to him, I can’t let it go to the judges and scorecards so I’ve got to show them that I’m the boss in there,” he said.
There will be even more Argentinian action when hard-hitting Lucas Matthysse steps into the ring as he looks to claim his first world title as he takes on the unbeaten Viktor Postol for the vacant WBC light-welterweight title this Saturday night.
The 33-year-old Matthysse, who is one of boxing’s most feared punchers with an incredible 34 knockouts from 37 victories, will have to be at his very best when he faces Freddie Roach trained Postol.
The Ukrainian hotshot has a 5-inch height advantage and has trained with some of boxing’s biggest names in his preparation for the live BoxNation bill.
“I’m glad to be here; I’ve waited for this opportunity a long time. I have been preparing for this fight like no other training camp I’ve had before,” said Postol.
“I’ve had a great camp. I’ve sparred with Manny Pacquiao and many other great fighters at the Wild Card Gym. I have all the experience now that people will underestimate. Good luck to Matthysse, and I can’t wait for this fight.”
Matthysse, however, appears unmoved and is raring to go this weekend.
“I’m very excited, I’m happy to be back in Carson to fight at the Stub Hub Center this Saturday.
“Thank you to Viktor Postol and his team for taking this fight. I can’t wait for fight night,” Matthysse said.
Ahead of Saturday night’s big US bill there will be some thrilling domestic action when undefeated middleweight Tommy Langford goes up against Cristian Fabian Rios for the WBO Inter-Continental title, with former world champion Paul Butler facing Hector Romaldo Guzman as part of a fantastic Wolverhampton card.
McKenzie v Ramirez is live from 2am this Friday night, Langford v Rios from 7pm this Saturday followed by Matthysse v Postol from 2am on Saturday night.
