On Saturday, May 5, 2018, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) will step into the ring at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV once again to face off against IBO, IBF, WBA and WBC Middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).
One major difference that is already evident compared to the first pre-fight rodeo is that all pleasantries have been thrown out the window.
Canelo and Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, have especially taken it upon themselves to verbally throw bombs, with each man firing shots towards one another during the kick-off press conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
Much of the back and forth between Canelo and Sanchez stems from the trainer’s claims that Canelo ran during the first fight–something that obviously bothers Canelo.
“I made him miss and I controlled the fight in the center of the ring,” said Canelo through a translator during a media roundtable. “I’m a technical fighter who knows how to make a fighter miss, that knows how to counterpunch. It’s not the same as just a jackass coming forward.”
By the time the fighters and their teams hit the stage at LA Live on Tuesday night to discuss the first fight and give fans a taste of what they can expect in the rematch, Sanchez was itching for a chance to go at Canelo who was shown in a pre-recorded video questioning Sanchez’s credentials as a trainer.
“I find it strange that he considers himself a great trainer, but can’t distinguish between having technique and running,” said Canelo in the video.
Sanchez wasted no time rolling out his impressive résumé to defend his points.
“I have one fighter already in the hall of fame, two others are headed to the hall of fame, 17 world champions later I think I know what I’m talking about,” said Sanchez.
Although Canelo and GGG shook hands and patted each other on the back during their multiple face offs on Tuesday night, it seems that things are just getting started between Canelo and Sanchez.
“I hope he goes home tonight and really reflects on what he’s said and says the same thing I’ve said, which is that he’s an idiot, because it’s the truth,” said Canelo.
