After less than a week after talks with Miguel Cotto came to an unsuccessful end, Saul Alvarez announced via Twitter that he will face James Kirkland on May 2.
Other sources, including Lance Pugmire of the LA Times also confirmed the fight, although a location has yet to be announced.
It’s signed: @caneloOficial and James Kirkland on regular @HBOboxing in May, site TBA.

The fight will be shown on regular HBO and will not be on HBO pay-per-view.
Alvarez, 24, of Mexico, is coming off 2014 wins against Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara and will face the hardest puncher he has ever faced.
Kirkland, 30, of Austin, Texas, has not fought since stopping Glen Tapia in December of 2013 and has had trouble staying active within the past few years.
Stylistically, the fight favors Alvarez, but we will have to see on May 2.
