Canelo on Golovkin: “I’d Put the Gloves on Right Now to Fight Him!”

After defeating Miguel Cotto on Saturday, Canelo Alvarez said he’s ready to face Gennady Golovkin. Is Canelo ready for the Middleweight heavy hitter or should he wait?

A few months ago, a kind of four-man Middleweight tournament was in the works.

Two of those men different fought for a portion of Middleweight crown: David Lemieux held the IBF Middleweight title, while Gennady Golovkin held the WBA and interim WBC titles.

We all know how that story went.

A third fighter, Miguel Cotto, held the WBC and Lineal Middleweight title, and pretty much held it hostage for over year as he looked for lucrative fights.

A fourth fighter, however, had never fought at Middleweight before, but had the skill and the star power to make a successful run at the crown.

Guess which one got the lion’s share of the tournament?

After twelve rounds of boxing, Canelo Alvarez scored a dominant unanimous decision victory against Miguel Cotto to win the Lineal and WBC Middleweight title at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alvarez, 25, was confident after his victory, and after being asked about Gennady Golovkin–who many people consider the real champion in the division–Alvarez had a lot to say.

“With all due respect, I can answer you now. Before, they would ask me but I was focused on this fight. If you want, I’ll put the gloves again and fight him right now,” said Alvarez.

“My respects—he’s a great champion. I know him; he’s a friend of mine. But I’m not afraid of anyone, and I’d put the gloves on right now to fight him,” said Alvarez to HBO’s Max Kellerman.

In the post-fight press conference, Alvarez was a bit more pragmatic with his response.

“If  we do fight, it’s going to be at my weight class,” said Alvarez.

“I’m the champion, and I don’t have to do what he wants,” Alvarez concluded.

It looks like the finals half of this Middleweight tournament may come to fruition.

Indeed, though he does have the lineal Middleweight championship of the world, Alvarez does not need a fight to make money. Although he must prepare negotiations for a fight with Golovkin within 15 days in order to avoid being stripped of his WBC strap, Alvarez doesn’t need a title to make money–his fights with Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland were conveniently one pound above the Junior Middleweight limit.

However, Alvarez has been all-too-willing to face dangerous opponents, which suggest that perhaps this dream match-up may become a reality some time in the future.

If the fight gets made, who do you think wins?
