Earlier today was the conference call for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

As both fighters took their time through their certainly busy, media-obligated day, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, got on the phone.

According to Schaefer, the fight has already sold more than 6,000 tickets so far and he does believe it will be a sell-out event.

Also on the card is Alvarez’s brother, Ricardo, who is challenging Omar Figueroa for the interim WBC Lightweight Championship.

If successful, the Alvarez family will make history as the first family to have three brothers to have held a world title. Schaefer promised this matchup would be “explosive and a slugfest throughout.”

He also noted that before the press conference, Alfredo Angulo will be participating in the organization Locks of Love, to help cancer patients who, due to chemotherapy, have lost their hair and are in need of hair donations.

As both fighters got on the phone, translations were done by Golden Boy matchmaker, Eric Gomez. After both fighters were introduced and commented about the fight, they were open for questions.

On why Angulo was picked over any current belt holders, Canelo said, “Angulo is a very strong fighter, he always comes to fight. He has the best style for the fans to make this fight an incredible one for the fans.”

Asked if he believed his fans will support him on pay-per-view after his loss to Floyd Mayweather, he said, “Of course, I have the most loyal fans and I undoubtedly believe they will support the PPV and me.”

Angulo was asked what does this fight mean to him besides any monetary value, since Canelo no longer holds a belt and why he believes he can win to which he responded,

It’s a very interesting fight. Everybody knows my style, it’s shown on my record. I always give 100 percent of myself. We’re both coming off losses so we both have something to prove. I’m coming in with a great game plan with Virgil Hunter, you’ll be surprised. As for who wins, it will prove who is the best Mexican in this division.

On being asked if he was in anyway affected by the loss to Mayweather and if he has sought a mental coach or psychological help, Canelo said, “No, thank God I am a very strong person mentally. I took it more of a learning lesson than anything else.”

When Angulo was asked why this fight was so important to him, he simply stated, “When you’re born, you’re born fighting, you’re fighting for a better life! This is the fight of my career!”

On March 8th, 2014 they will both go “Toe-to-Toe.”
