On Friday, May 8, 2015, Frankie Gomez failed to make weight for his fight against Humberto Soto on the undercard of the Junior Middleweight fight between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland. Gomez’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, shared his thoughts during Saturday’s post-fight press conference.

Gomez was given the chance to fight between a replay of MayweatherPacquiao and Canelo-Kirkland, but instead was sidelined due to his inability to make weight.

The fight was originally going to be at 141 pounds and was renegotiated to 145 by Friday, but Gomez still came in over at 147½ pounds.

“What he did for this event was heartbreaking for me because you couldn’t give him a more perfect platform. I mean, fighting in between the replay of Mayweather-Pacquiao and then Canelo-Kirkland–the stage doesn’t get any bigger than that,” said De La Hoya.

“I was very disappointing, but,” he continued, “I’m not going to give up on him.”

“He has to learn to his lesson, but there are ways we can go about it. I told him when we re=signed him that I’m going to take him under my wing, and help him out and talk to him,” said De La Hoya.

What do you think about Gomez’s weight trouble? What will he need to do to prove to boxing fans that he is serious about the sport?
