On Saturday, September 16, 2017, former two-division world champion and current lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) will take on WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Supremacy showdown will crown the king of the Middleweight division and is highly-anticipated among boxing fans.
During a conference call on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Oscar De La Hoya answered questions about Canelo-GGG in comparison to the other upcoming mega boxing event–Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.
“By far this [Canelo-GGG] is the biggest fight–probably in the history of the Middleweight division,” said De La Hoya without skipping a beat. “In terms of magnitude, PR and attention it’s receiving, this has to be the biggest. We have to wait until September 16 to see if it’ll be the best, but it has all the ingredients.”
Not surprisingly, De La Hoya has been critical of the Mayweather vs. McGregor, but he feels that fans have spoken with their wallets when deciding which event is the best.
“We are concentrating on our fight and event. Obviously we have a serious fight and serious event,” said De La Hoya. “The fans recognize the seriousness of Canelo vs. Golovkin. The fans and media people have recognized that as well. The fact that the tickets sold out in less than two weeks says a lot. The people will be very happy with this fight.”
While Canelo vs. GGG quickly sold out, Mayweather vs. McGregor still has quite a way to go to reach that feat.
According to the LA Times, Mayweather vs. McGregor officials who are connected to the public sale of tickets said, as of late last week, that 3,000 seats still remain for that bout.
