On Saturday, July 2, 2016, Denis Shafikov (37-2-1, 20 KOs) scored a tenth-round stoppage victory against Jamel Herring (15-1, 8 KOs) at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The scheduled 10-round Lightweight fight headlined the latest edition of PBC on ESPN.
The first round, Herring tried to gain control of the fight by working on the outside. The 30-year-old native of Cincinnati, Ohio seemed to be doing pretty well–that is, until the second round.
Indeed, as he was pushing forward with everything, Denis Shafikov landed a right hook that immediately dropped Herring.

Herring’s knockdown was caused by his backing straight up after throwing his punches. Another mistake he’d make often is when he’d admire his work after landing a punch instead of moving his head to avoid a counter shot.
The rest of the fight was spent on the inside, where Shafikov landed hard shots to the body and head of Herring. By the end of Round 9, it was clear that Herring was taking too much punishment, and his corner advised him to do something before they’d stop the fight.
Unfortunately for Herring, Shafikov landed a hard shot at the very beginning of Round 10, forcing Herring’s corner to stop the fight.
Herring takes a big step back in his career, while Shafikov remains a dominant force at Lightweight.
