Dominic Breazeale Digs Deeps to Knock out Izu Ugonoh in 5

Izu Ugonoh’s (17-1, 14 KOs) rise to Heavyweight power was brought to a halt at the hands of Dominic Breazeale (18-1, 16 KOs) in a slobberknocker of a battle on the undercard of Deontay Wilder’s title defense.

Izu Ugonoh’s (17-1, 14 KOs) rise to Heavyweight power was brought to a halt at the hands of Dominic Breazeale (18-1, 16 KOs) in a slobberknocker of a battle on the undercard of Deontay Wilder’s title defense.

Ugonoh, who seemed expected to win the bout given his previous status as boxing’s hidden secret, came out looking quite impressive against the B-level Breazeale, ripping to the body and finishing off his combinations to his opponent’s head.

It looked after the first two rounds that Breazeale was going to be in deep trouble if he didn’t change the pace of the fight soon. His eyes were swollen nearly shut and it looked like the only thing keeping him up was his heart and his chin.

Come the third round, Breazeale found exactly what he needed to turn the fight around. After taking a couple of hard shots and leaning on the ropes, Ugonoh got reckless thinking perhaps that his man was out of the fight for good.

Breazeale, game as ever, shot back with a counter right hook that put Ugonoh down hard for an entire 9-count.

Ugonoh appeared to be in trouble, taking a series of hard shots from the American and having his head snapped back when pushed up against the ropes. Breazeale punched himself out trying to get Ugonoh out in the third, however, and Ugonoh fought back valiantly enough to pound Breazeale’s body, nearly flooring him.

In the fourth, it seemed like Ugonoh was back on track, landing incessantly all over Brezeale’s body and head, eventually putting Breazeale down. It looked as though that was going to be the end of it, but Breazeale got up and ran out the clock, making it to the fifth round.

Ugonoh appeared to have expended all of his energy by the fifth, boxing on the outside and arm-weary. Breazeale, in a burst of energy, noticed this and went to work landing hard shots through Ugonoh’s guard and putting him down for the final time as the referee called off the bout.

Both men proved their worth, but in the end it was Breazeale who made a statement, putting all up and coming Heavyweights on notice–he’s still here, and he’s still dangerous if you’re not careful with him.
