Although Errol Spence is busy making plans to unify the division, he’ll have to take care of some other business first.
According to ESPN, the International Boxing Federation has sent the Welterweight titleholder a letter, through boxing promoter Tom Brown’s TGB Promotions, ordering a bout between Spence and undefeated contender, Carlos Ocampo.
Spence is coming off of an impressive eighth-round stoppage victory over Lamont Peterson on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Ocampo, who is virtually unknown to the casual boxing fan, is 22-0, 13 KOs and hasn’t faced any real threats in his professional career. Ocampo’s best win came against Jorge Paez Jr. back in 2015–a fight Ocampo won on points.
Although a Spence-Ocampo fight is not the high-profile bout that boxing fans are clamoring for, it does give Spence the opportunity to stage a hometown showcase in Dallas before a big fall matchup to close out the year.
Spence has stated on numerous occasions that he wants to fight three times in 2018 with his most desired opponent being WBA and WBC champion, Keith Thurman.
“Everybody knows I’ve been waiting on “Some Time” Thurman,” said Spence on Saturday when looking ahead to a possible unification match Thurman. “Since I was 15-0 I’ve been calling this guy out and he keeps making excuses. Let’s get it on. He has two of the belts and we both have big names. It’s an easy fight to make and I want it.”
Boxing fans want it too, but it appears that we will all have to wait a bit longer.
