Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Taylor (17-2, 12 KOs)  in the main event of the February 14, 2014 edition of Friday Night Fights. The ten-round Light Welterweight bout was part of a televised card presented by Star Boxing Promotions and ESPN.

Algieri started the bout comfortably, letting go of his jab, punching around Taylor’s peek-a-boo defense, and utilizing his footwork. With his guard always in the right place–elbows by the ribs, hands by the chin–Algieri boxed with his defense in mind.

Indeed, with a master’s degree in the medical field, it’s no surprise that Algieri fought intelligently. He easily outboxed Taylor for most of the first half as Taylor grew gun-shy in the face of Algieri’s offense.

In the fifth round, Taylor became more aggressive, walking down Algieri and landing a few punches. Algieri, who was fighting in front of his hometown audience, did not allow Taylor to gain any more momentum and returned with a series of uppercuts.

In the tenth and final round, Taylor was a lot busier, ostensibly aware that he was far behind on the scorecards. Taylor’s efforts came much too late as Algieri continued to outbox him en route to the final bell.

The judges scored the bout 97-97 97-93 98-92. Algieri will now seek more lucrative fights in the Junior Welterweight and Welterweight divisions.

Jeremy Bryan (17-3, 7 KOs)  won a unanimous decision over Issouf Kindav(16-2, 6 KOs)  in the co-main event of the evening.

In what looked like a better fight on paper, both fighter’s lack of offensive technique led to a veritable stalemate, in which neither fighter could land significant punches. Bryan had a slight edge over Kinda, landing more punches and using the jab a little more often.

Nevertheless, it was not as exciting as many thought it would be. The judges scored the bout 77-75,77-75, 78-73.

In the night’s opening bout, Wendy Toussaint (4-0) won a majority decision over Anthony Gangemi (4-2, 3 KOs) with the judges scoring 39-37, 39-37, 38-38.
