In the opening bout on the July 11 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, Jonathan Maicelo (21-1 with 12 KOs) took Art Hovhannisyan (17-2-2, 9 KOs) to school, constantly beating the Armenian to the punch on the way to a 10-round split decision victory.

Two judges scored the fight 100-90 and 97-93 for Maicelo, while a presumably drunk and high Glenn Hamada scored the bout 96-94 for Hovhannisyan.

Round By Round Boxing scored it 98-92 for Maicelo.

The fight started out with Hovhannisyan stalking, while Maicelo landed the crisper punches. He took control of the fight early on with some nice combinations, and Hovhannisyan couldn’t quite get into the fight.

While Maicelo looked excellent, it was not a good fight for the officials. During the fifth round, Maicelo smashed Hovhannisyan with a huge right hand. He followed it up with about 470 punches and had his opponent in serious trouble. That is, until the bell rang to end the round.

One minute early.

Maicelo dominated the rest of the rounds using excellent footwork and a stiff overhand right, while Hovhannisyan just couldn’t step on the gas. He continued to stalk his Peruvian opponent, but couldn’t land anything of note.

He seemed to gain some momentum in the seventh round, when he landed a left hook and some stiff jabs to cut Maicelo’s right eye, but didn’t follow up in the subsequent rounds. The two fighters went toe-to-toe in the 10th, with Maicelo getting the better of the assault.

While we’d like to see some more of Maicelo, Hamada’s disgusting scorecard tainted his solid performance.

The fact that he somehow found six rounds to score for Hovhannisyan means he either wasn’t watching the fight or Hovhannisyan has some incriminating photos of him in his possession.
