Boxcino 2015

ESPN continued its Boxcino Tournament on the April 10, 2015 edition of Friday Night Fights with two Heavyweight and two Light Middleweight semifinal fights.

Each of tonight’s fights were scheduled for eight rounds, but with one caveat: if a fight ends in a draw after the eighth round, it will be continued for a ninth tie-breaking round.

There weren’t any tie-breaking rounds, but there were three stoppages tonight.

The winner of both tournaments will be awarded a special ESPN Boxcino belt after the final stage of the tournament, which will be on May 22.

Andrey Fedosov (26-3, 21 KOs) vs. Lenroy Thomas (19-3, 9 KOs)

Andrey Fedosov scored a third-round TKO victory over Lenroy Thomas in the first heavyweight semifinal fight.

Fedosov was knocked down early in Round 1 with a straight left hand, but held his composure enough to begin dominating Thomas in Rounds 2 and 3.

Fedosov stopped the fight with a powerful combination in Round 3 and secured his place for the final stop of the tournament, which will be on May 22.

Donovan Dennis (11-1, 9 KOs) vs. Razvan Cojanu (13-1, 7 KOs)

Donavan Dennis scored a potential Knockout of the Year as he stopped Razvan Cojanu in the second round of tonight’s second Heavyweight semifinal fight.

Dennis timed a perfect left hand that caught Cojanu as he was coming in.

Cojanu did not recover and failed to stand up before referee Shawn Clark counted to ten.

Dennis will fight Fedosov in the final stage of the Heavyweight tournament on May 22.

Stanyslav Skorokhod (9-0, 7 KOs) vs. John Thompson (15-1, 5 KOs)

John Thompson, who entered the tournament as a last-minute replacement in February, scored a close split decision victory over Stanyslav Skorokhod.

Thompson boxed the early rounds from the outside, although he sometimes became a target for Skorokhod’s punches.

Nevertheless, as the fight progressed, Skorohod seemed to close the distance much better, but had trouble with Thompson’s boxing and straight left hands.

Thompson walked away with scores of 78-74 and 77-75, while one judge scored it 74-78 for Skorokhod.

Brandon Adams (16-1, 11 KOs) vs. Vito Gasparyan (15-3-5, 8 KOs)

Brandon Adams scored a seventh-round TKO after a steady assault to Vito Gasparyan’s left ear lead to the fight’s being stopped after Gasparyan’s ear became grotesquely swollen.

Adams fought at close range for the entire fight and used short punches to outwork and outland Gasparyan for the entire fight.

Gasparyan was the taller fighter, but instead of using his reach and height advantages, Gasparyan worked at close range with Adams.

Gasparyan needed to have boxed Adams from the outside, but he lacked the athleticism and the skill to keep Adams away, who was able to land short right hooks that steadily caused the swelling on Gasparyan’s ear.

Adams will now face Thompson in the final stage of the Light Middleweight tournament on May 22.
