Adrien Broner

It’s a Draw: What’s Next for Jessie Vargas and Adrien Broner?

Now that each has a draw on their record, where do they go from here? What will the future hold for Jessie Vargas and Adrien Broner?

Last Saturday night, April 21, 2018, Jessie Vargas (28-2-1, 10 KOs) and Adrien Broner (33-3-1 24 KOs) fought an entertaining war, which ended in a draw. You may be a fan of one or the other, but it is hard to complain about this decision–both men left it all in the ring.

Vargas pushed the pace in the beginning, starting out strong behind his jab. Broner fought back in the middle-to-late rounds, doing enough to come back on the scorecards.

It seemed as though Vargas may have simply done too much in the early rounds. For the first six rounds, Vargas’ energy level was through the roof and he was beautifully working off his jab, allowing him to control the rounds.

Working off of his lead made it extremely difficult for Broner to establish a consistent offense. Into the second half of the fight the tables turned as Vargas seemed to slow down–not only was he landing less but he was getting hit significantly more.

In the early rounds, Broner struggled to let his hands go. Though Broner turned it on in the second half of the fight, in the eyes of many–and the ones that count–he did not do enough to earn a victory Saturday night.

When the wear of the fight was apparent on Vargas, Broner turned the fight into a calculated brawl. Broner displayed his hand speed and aggression which won him a majority of the later rounds.

Both Vargas and Broner needed this win in hopes of turning their momentum around and prove that they are still among the elite, yet each came up just short of doing so.

Now that each has a draw on their record, where do they go from here? What will the future hold for Jessie Vargas and Adrien Broner?

One can imagine there wouldn’t be too many boxing fans opposed to a rematch between Vargas and Broner. Stylistically, it’s a good matchup every time.

For Vargas to come out victorious he would need to work behind his jab throughout the entirety of the fight, avoiding getting lured inside to brawl by Broner. Broner would need to establish his offense sooner in the next bout if he wants to see more success.

Adrien Broner: Amir Khan expressed interest in fighting Broner after his TKO victory over Phil Lo Greco Saturday night in Liverpool.

“I’d like Broner, Broner is a big name that would be a great fight, to bring him to the UK. The UK market is massive now and fighters from America want to come here. I think he would take the fight,” said Khan.

This fight makes sense for a number of reasons–Broner has never fought in the United Kingdom. This would be a good opportunity for Broner to expand into a new market.

This fight would also be a good payday for Broner and possibly be an even easier fight than a rematch with Jessie Vargas.

Another potentially intriguing fight for Broner would include a clash with Omar Figueroa, who was previously scheduled to take on Broner before Vargas before he sustained an injury.

This would be a jump up in competition for Figueroa, but this may just be the fight Broner needs to get back on track.

Jessie Vargas: If the rematch doesn’t happen, Vargas has no shortages of stiff 147-pound competition under Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions.

Some good matchups would include bouts with Devon Alexander, Andre Berto and even the up-and-coming star Jamontay Clark.

Though Vargas was hoping for another title shot after Broner, he’ll need a couple more bouts under his belt to earn that opportunity.
