JARON ENNIS vs. SERGEY LIPINETS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED FOR APRIL 10

Jaron Ennis vs. Sergey Lipinets

Rising Welterweight Jaron Ennis is set to face former champion Sergey Lipinets on Showtime on April 10 at the Mohegan Sun.

Highly touted Welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis (26-0, 24 KOs) is preparing to take on the toughest test of his career next month.

Following an initial report from The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, Showtime and PBC announced that Ennis will face former champion Sergey Lipinets (16-1-1, 12 KOs) in the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing card slated for April 10 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“Ennis vs. Lipinets is a fantastic fight in the welterweight division that pits an ascending force in Ennis against a former world champion in Lipinets,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions, in a press release. “It’s a very competitive fight that presents a fascinating clash of styles and will have big implications on the future of the 147-pound division.”

Ennis, a 23-year-old native of Philadelphia, has established himself as one of the 147-pound division’s most exciting contenders. A powerful puncher with high-level boxing skills, the unbeaten Ennis was previously riding a 16-fight knockout streak.

In his last fight against Chris Van Heerden this past December, that streak came to an end as the fight was called off in round one due to an accidental clash of heads. However, up until that point in the bout, “Boots” found quite a bit of success against what was deemed a step up in competition.

Although many have labeled him as a future champion, Ennis has faced limited opposition throughout his career thus far. That won’t be the case against Lipinets, though, as the former IBF Junior Welterweight champion has established himself as a bonafide Welterweight contender.

“I’m excited to be back April 10,” said Ennis. “This is the type of fight I’ve been waiting for. I can’t wait to perform and put on a beautiful show. Y’all will see something special out of me come fight night. I’m excited to be the main event. It’s time for me to shine!”

The 31-year-old Lipinets, a battle-tested veteran, won the IBF title with a unanimous decision victory over Akihiro Kondo in 2017 but then dropped it in his next fight when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to former four-division champion Mikey Garcia

Following the loss to Garcia, Lipinets, who currently trains under respected trainer Jon Goosen, moved up to 147 pounds, where he made waves by scoring an emphatic TKO victory over Lamont Peterson in 2019.

He followed that up with another TKO victory over Jayar Inson and is now coming off a majority draw against Custio Clayton last year.

“Training is grueling and I’m working hard with Joe Goossen to be at my best on fight night,” said Lipinets. “We have a tough, young fighter in Ennis who thinks I’m a stepping stone for him. But sometimes stepping stones trip you up, and I’ll be doing my best to trip him up on April 10.

“I’m just doing my best to get prepared for what I expect to be a dog fight. Every fan that knows boxing knows that this is going to be a real war and worth tuning in for. I expect we’ll be fighting in a phone booth at times, but I also expect him to try to use his reach and fight me at a distance at times. But no matter what he does, I’ll be ready for him.”
