In a battle of two top-ten Junior Middleweights, Jermell Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) edged a close unanimous decision win over Vanes Martirosyan (35-2-1, 21 KOs) at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 10-round fight was the co-main event of a card televised on Showtime in the U.S.

Nearly each round was very close as both fighters landed counter right hands and left hooks that continually kept the other alert.

Charlo, 24, of Richmond, Texas, started off with a quick jab that was followed by a right hand.

Martirosyan, however, returned fire with punches to the body, making the earlier rounds very tough to score.

Martirosyan, a 28-year-old native of Abovyan, Armenia, was successful in his body attack but by the middle rounds had largely forgotten to attack the body and instead began to head hunt.

It was in Rounds 5 and 6 that his body attack faded and which had some of Charlo’s best moments.

In Round 8, Martirosyan suffered a cut above his left eye and almost put the fight in danger.

Nevertheless, after a bit of work from his corner, he returned to the fight with regained intensity, despite eventually losing on all scorecards.

The judges scored the fight 93-97, 94-96, and 94-96 for Charlo, who boosts his status in the Junior Middleweight division tonight.

Martirosyan, on his part, believes he won this fight and, because it was tough fight to score, does not lose much from this fight tonight besides another blemish on his record.
