With the odds firmly stacked against him, Kell Brook entered the lion’s den this past Saturday night with a steely determination, hoping to upset the IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter, who had previously bulldozed his way to the top of the boxing world.
After 12 tug-of-war rounds, which saw both men face adversity; the Sheffield fighter triumphed with a debatable majority point’s victory.
Brook’s immense euphoria was immediately evident as the realization set in that he had finally captured that evasive world title he had dreamt of since he was a boy.
Moments after the fight though, attention turned swiftly to old nemesis, Amir Khan. As Brook made it abundantly clear that he is eager for a big money showdown with the man from Bolton, who had previously dismissed Brook, as bringing nothing to the table.
However, now that the 29-year-old Brook holds that illustrious IBF strap, it now seems that both men are on a collision course and destined to meet and settle an old score.
The hatred between the two Brits stemmed from a sparring session that took place many years ago, which culminated in both men claiming to have gotten the better of one another. Since that fateful spar, Brook and Khan had gone their respective ways, hoping that someday they would collide in the ring and settle their differences for real.
With that day seemingly approaching, talk has already begun as to who would come out victorious in the battle of Britain. I believe Khan would be exposed by the classy Brook, whose power and patient boxing ability would prove as an unsolvable puzzle for the former two-weight world champion.
And as anticipation builds regarding the potential bout, the outcome of that fateful spar and the origins of their animosity have faded into insignificance, yet their well-publicized ring rivalry is extremely significant as it adds fuel to an already blazing fire.
In the sport of boxing, a rivalry undeniably sells. It captures the imagination of the casual fight fan who would normally not take such an intense interest in the sweet science. This fight fits that bill, as Kell Brook and Amir Khan’s resentment towards one another has increased the pressure on two of British boxing’s very best to finally square off and set the record straight once and for all.
We can only hope it’s sooner rather than later!
