Kovalev Dismantles Mohammedi in 3, Says He’d Be Happy to Fight Ward

Going into his fight against the best Light Heavyweight in the world, not many gave Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KOs) a shot at beating Sergey Kovalev (28-0, 25 KOs).

Going into his fight against the best Light Heavyweight in the world, not many gave Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KOs) a shot at beating Sergey Kovalev (28-0, 25 KOs).

Indeed, as his wins over Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal suggest, Kovalev is an unstoppable force and it will probably take another A-level fighter to beat him.

Tonight, as expected, Mohammedi did not stand a chance as he was knocked down in out in the third round of a scheduled 12-round fight for Kovalev’s IBF, WBO and WBA titles.

The fight headlined an HBO doubleheader at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kovalev, whose height and reach advantages were clear from the opening bell, began stalking Mohammedi with his signature jabs–some to the top, and some to the body.

Then, within this very first round, Kovalev floored Mohammedi with a right hand, and then asked him to get up to deliver more punishment.

Later on, Kovalev said that he told Mohammedi to get up in order to provide a longer lasting show for the fans in attendance.

“I told him stand up. It was short show. People didn’t see boxing. I wanted to continue. I tried to continue longer this fight,” said Kovalev, who is learning how to speak English well.

Mohammedi got back to his feet, but only to be dropped by a left hand in Round 3, which seemed to break his nose.

Nevertheless, it was a punch he could not recover from, and the fight was immediately stopped.

Now, it looks like we may be headed toward a clash with Andre Ward for 2016.

In his post-fight interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman, Kovalev said that he’d be happy to fight him.

The fight is likely to take place next year as Kovalev already has a fight scheduled for later this year, while Ward is slowly tuning up after a two-year layoff.

Both have expressed interest in the fight, so it is definitely a possibility.
