If you thought Lucas Matthysse’s was done, it’s time to think again. The veteran who was previously thought to be washed up proved himself tonight against the always game journeyman Emmanuel Taylor.

Matthysse came roaring back into the sport with a knockout that sent Taylor to the gates of hell. Taylor, who is normally a rock steady opponent and a tough fight for anyone in the weight range, found himself in deep trouble early on as Matthysse was able to cut off the ring beautifully and land with precise punches that peppered Taylor’s head and body.

Taylor’s corner coerced him into just trying to survive to the later rounds where they believed they could sap Matthysse of his energy but it was in vain as Taylor was floored by a perfect right hand in the third.

Fighting back did Taylor no good and come the fifth, he ate a hard left hook in an exchange that put him to the canvas for good. Referee Jay Nady waved off the bout as Taylor began to rise.

Matthysse now finds himself a game opponent for anyone in a Welterweight division running over with talent.

“This victory motivates me, this is exactly what I needed to come back where I left off,” said Matthysse after the win.

“I felt great inside the ring and I felt like I dominated the fight at the pace I wanted. I feel great and I’m ready for what’s next.”
