360 Promotions’ 2019 season got off to a bang with a main event that featured Maricela Cornejo against a tough Erin Toughill in the main event.
Cornejo (13-3, 5 KOs) defeated Toughil (7-4-1) by unanimous decision after eight grueling rounds Sunday at the Avalon Hollywood. Two judges scored the bout 79-73 while the third had it 78-74 in favor of Cornejo.
“I was not gonna look past her,” Cornejo said. “She’s a very talented athlete. It was a fun fight. She was gonna come out with aggression and we were expecting that so we stuck to our game plan and allowed her to spend energy.”
The fight was closer than the scores indicate. Toughill’s last fight was in 2006 but she gave Cornejo all she could handle, pressing the action and stalking her throughout the fight. Cornejo relied on the jab and 1-2 combinations to fend off Toughill.
“I’d love to have a rematch,” Toughill said. “I think it was a lot closer than the judges were saying. I think I’ll be better next time, considering I haven’t fought boxing in 12 years.”
Both fighters picked up the action in the fifth round, trading big shots. Toughill landed a few body shots but not enough to her liking.
“In the inside I should have thrown a lot more,” Toughill said. “On the outside I felt ok.”
Cornejo had won eight consecutive fights before losing to Franchon Crews Dezurn last September in Las Vegas.
