Caleb Plant is one of the few fighters in boxing that can provide an insight into a potential clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and David Benavidez.
The 32-year-old from Tennessee has faced both men during his career. He clashed with ‘Canelo’ in November 2021, putting his IBF super middleweight title on the line in an undisputed championship showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Mexican icon handed Plant the first defeat of his career, stopping ‘Sweethands’ in the eleventh round.
The second defeat of Plant’s career came against Benavidez when they met in March 2023 for the WBC ‘interim’ super middleweight title. ‘The Monster’ outpointed Plant over 12-rounds with all three judges scoring the contest in favour of Benavidez.
Speaking to Kevin Iole, the 32-year-old was asked to discuss a potential showdown between his former opponents, where he confirmed ‘Canelo’ was the harder puncher of the two.
“I think it’s one hell of a fight, Canelo’s one hell of a fighter that’s why I wanted to fight him, David’s one hell of a fighter and even though we had bad blood that’s why I wanted to fight him to. I want to be the best so you’ve got to beat the best, you can’t just talk about it you’ve got to go after it.
I think Canelo hits harder for one punch, putting his combinations together than David, but David puts his hands together more than Canelo does.”
A match-up between ‘Canelo’ and Benavidez is yet to happen, despite the latter being mandatory challenger to the Mexican icon’s WBC 168lb title for a period of time.
The 28-year-old from Phoenix has recently made the move up to light heavyweight, where he holds the WBC ‘interim’ crown. He is due to face WBA ‘regular’ champion David Morrell on February 1 in Las Vegas.
