Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and David Benavidez are yet to meet in the ring despite being embroiled in a long-term rivalry.
Benavidez was the mandatory challenger to Canelo’s WBC super middleweight title for a period of time, but a contest between the pair never materialised, which has led to ‘The Monster’ making the move up to light heavyweight.
‘The Monster’ currently holds the WBC ‘interim’ title at 175lbs which he won last June after outpointing Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Las Vegas. He is gearing up to challenge WBA ‘regular’ champion David Morrell on February 1, in a fight that has captured the attention of boxing fans around the world.
Speaking to FightHub TV, Canelo gave his opinion on how he thinks ‘The Monster’ is progressing at 175lbs in comparison to his time at super middleweight.
“He’s not the same.”
Artur Beterbiev is the current undisputed champion at light heavyweight after he handed Dmitry Bivol his first career defeat back in October. Canelo made it clear whether he believes Benavidez can go on to challenge the best at his new weight.
“Look, it’s his weight class. 175 is his weight class, and he do nothing at 175, really.”
It remains unclear if a showdown between Canelo and Benavidez will ever happen, much to the disappointment of fans and pundits around the globe.
Benavidez has stated he has moved on from facing his fellow Mexican and will be targeting the winner of the Beterbiev-Bivol rematch that takes place on February 22 in Saudi Arabia.
