Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is no stranger to success as he continues to prove himself as one of the best fighters on the planet.
The Mexican superstar currently reigns as the unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight champion, and has dominated the 168lbs division for many years.
The 34-year-old’s most recent victory came in September when he proved to be too much for highly rated contender Edgar Berlanga Jr, picking up a comprehensive decision win at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo is also a former undisputed super middleweight champion, having claimed all four of division’s title belts back in November 2021 when he knocked out Caleb Plant in the eleventh round of their battle.
In 66 professional outings, the Mexican icon has lost just twice, defeating a host of top fighters including Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto and Jermell Charlo.
Speaking to PBC, Canelo named Billy Joe Saunders as the opponent he held the most hatred for, following a fiery build-up ahead of their bout in May 2021.
“Billy Joe Saunders – that f***er p***ed me off, that’s why he got what he deserved. Some fighters talk to sell a fight, but I think he’s a bad person and I really enjoyed beating that guy.”
Saunders went toe-to-toe with Canelo at the AT&T Stadium back in 2021, putting his WBO super middleweight title on the line against the pound-for-pound star. It was the Brit who started the fight very well, before crumbling under the Mexican’s intense pressure.
Saunders’ corner pulled their man out in the eighth round after concerns over his eyesight. It was later revealed that Canelo had broken his opponent’s eye socket.
The 35-year-old from Hertfordshire, England has not fought since that devastating loss to Alvarez, but it has been revealed in recent weeks that he is targeting a return to the ring in 2025, with Chris Eubank Jr emerging as a potential opponent.
