Despite the persistent rumours over the last few years, a fight between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez is still yet to happen.
Boxing fans have called for a fight between the pair to take place for a while now, but negotiations between the camps appear to have hit a number of obstacles along the way.
With both men now campaigning in separate divisions, and with the potential of Benavidez even moving up to cruiserweight in the near future, a showdown looks to be as far away from happening as possible.
Benavidez is scheduled to return to the ring in February 2025, challenging WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For Canelo, his next outing is yet to be confirmed, although reports of a super fight against Terence Crawford happening next have ramped up.
Benavidez has revealed his interest in challenging newly crowned unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, who added the WBO belt to his collection after outpointing Chris Billam-Smith in Riyadh last month.
As the long-running rivalry between Canelo and Benavidez continues, the 34-year-old unified super middleweight champion needed just four words whilst speaking to Fight Hub TV to sum up the difference between himself and his rival.
“He’s good. I’m great.”
Canelo then gave his thoughts on how ‘The Mexican Monster’ has performed at 175lbs, compared to his successful run in the division below.
“He’s not the same.
“Look, it’s his weight class. 175 is his weight class, and he do nothing at 175, really.”
The chances of Canelo and Benavidez clashing look to be reliant on whether Alvarez plans on rolling the dice at 175lbs once more, with his last outing not going as he’d expected following a decision loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022.
