Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez looks to have finally made his mind up about a potential clash with Terence Crawford.
The Mexican superstar has been heavily linked with a mega fight against the former undisputed welterweight champion, despite his initial uncertainty about facing ‘Bud’.
Speaking to Box Azteca, Canelo appeared to rule out a fight with Crawford, claiming he would receive criticism for facing the smaller man.
“No [I will never fight Crawford].
People criticised me fighting Charlo because he was coming up in weight so now imagine Crawford going from welterweight to 168lbs, I have everything to lose and nothing to gain because if I win, they’ll say, ‘Oh, he was too small, and everything!”
The 34-year-old appears to have had a change of heart, as he revealed in a more recent interview with Supreme Boxing that he would go ahead with a showdown against the American, so long as the money made sense for him.
“It depends on the money but why not?
In the end, he is a great fighter, Crawford, obviously 3 divisions lower, but as I have said to you, I have fought with people bigger than me, the same categories as me, shorter than me, older than me, younger than me.
In the end, I was born to fight, I am here to fight with whoever, obviously with the terms that most suit me, at this point in my career I am always going to do the best fights and those that suit me.”
Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh has expressed his desire to get a fight between the pound-for-pound stars over the line, with news on both fighters’ next steps expected to be announced very soon.
