It appears Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has not given up on being undisputed champion for the second time.

The Mexican superstar is the reigning WBC, WBA and WBO champion at 168lbs, having held all four of the world titles before he was stripped of the IBF strap last summer, after he opted to face Edgar Berlanga Jr rather than the IBF’s mandatory challenger William Scull.

Scull, who is undefeated in 23 professional contests, claimed the IBF super middleweight title back in October when he outpointed the no.2 contender Vladimir Shishkin in Germany.

Canelo originally ruled out facing Skull, telling Million Dollaz that there are levels and he had never heard of him.

“There are levels. There are stars and there are superstars. They make the championship, not the championship makes them.

Who is William Scull? I never hear about him. I’m not gonna do whatever they want. I’m gonna do whatever I want. Because I deserve it, because of all I have done.”

Despite Canelo’s initial reluctance to face Scull, the 34-year-old appears to have made a u-turn as Scull’s teams confirmed to Punos Cubanos that communication between the two camps had begun for the ‘history making’ fight.

“But we are aiming to unify with Canelo Alvarez. And now on January 10 we will speak over the phone and they will tell us more later.

I will keep you informed on what is coming because this is going to be a great year.

That will be a good fight for me [with Canelo] to continue dreaming and continue making history.”

Well known boxing journalist Jake Donovan confirmed talks had started but that Scull was just one of several options.

Canelo has also been linked with a sensational mega fight with four-weight world champion Terence Crawford, which is reportedly being targeted to take place by this Summer.
