Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is no stranger to success, having held world titles in four divisions and the undisputed championship at super middleweight.

The Mexican superstar has had 66 fights as a professional since he entered the ranks at just 15-years-old. He has suffered two defeats in that time, falling short to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol in 2013 and 2022 respectively.

His most recent victory came in September 2024, as he successfully defended his WBA, WBO and WBC super middleweight belts with a comprehensive points win over highly rated contender Edgar Berlanga Jr at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Canelo’s next outing is still waiting to be finalised, with rumours of a clash with pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford being fuelled in recent months. Another man who has put his been chasing a shot at Canelo for some time is 34-year-old David Benavidez, the undefeated fighter currently holds the WBC ‘interim’ light heavyweight crown.

Speaking to PPV.com, Benavidez claimed he can become the first man to stop Canelo, believing his punching power would be the difference in a clash with the Mexican.

“I do think that but I also think that just because I’m some type of fighter doesn’t mean there aren’t new tricks I can learn. There’s some stuff that I’ve seen that can be effective against Canelo. Throwing punches in bunches, using the jab, being the bigger fighter and using the ring.

There’s things that we’ve kind of seen Canelo get exposed by so that’s something I can implement into this fight. Whenever that fight does happen I can see there’s a perfect game plan to get a victory in that fight.

I’m not trying to go for decision, I’m trying to knock him out, the key to victory is there, I’ve seen it already.”

After being unable to secure a fight with Canelo, ‘The Monster’ moved up to 175lbs where he has picked up the WBC ‘interim’ title, as he now prepares to challenge WBA ‘regular’ titlist David Morrell on February 1.
