Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has evolved into a force to be reckoned with at super middleweight.
The former undisputed champion at 168lbs, who now holds the unified WBA, WBC and WBO titles, has faced an array of top fighters throughout his career and has is unbeaten at 168lbs.
His most recent victory came in September when he defeated Edgar Berlanga Jr via unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
Although the 34 year old has proven credentials time and time again in recent years, there is a former world champion who has spoken openly about his desire to come out of retirement and ‘destroy’ Canelo.
Speaking to MillCity Boxing, three-weight world champion James Toney pulled no punches when talking about the Mexican superstar, claiming he would have no problem in beating the reigning 168lb king.
“We put too much emphasis on Canelo. If you look at it, he’s fought all these guys who are lighter than him, or they are past their prime and all of that, you can’t compare this mother****er to me, dog.
I fought the best fighters in their prime. I don’t even want to talk about the mother****er, because he p***es me off.
I could always come out of retirement and whoop his a** right now, I’d f**k him up, for real, I haven’t got a problem doing that!
I’d beat Canelo right now. He can be knocked out, he’s not all that. He’s no James Toney. He’s not in my league, he can’t carry my bags. Stop comparing him to me because there is no match, I would destroy him.”
Toney’s last outing came in 2017 with a win over Mike Sheppard. ‘Lights Out’ has revealed his desire on more than one occasion about making a return to the sport if the opportunity arises.
