Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez could be set to clash in a dream fight at some stage in 2025.
The pound-for-pound stars are reportedly both keen on facing one another, with their respective teams having brief discussions over the last couple of months.
Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh has been very open in his desire to make the fight happen in the near future, and if there is one man who can get a showdown like this over the line, it’s definitely him.
Crawford’s most recent victory came against Israil Madrimov back in August, dethroning the WBA super-welterweight champion and becoming one of the few fighters in boxing history to win world titles in four weight classes.
Speaking to Sporting News in a video that came just before his history making win over Errol Spence Jr, where he became undisputed welterweight champion, the 37-year-old claimed he was not interested in a move up to 168lbs to challenge Canelo.
“168? I ain’t going up there.”
However, in recent months Crawford has made it clear that his main motivation is now a fight against the Mexican, revealing to The Porter Way Podcast that he will consider retirement if all else fails.
“To be honest that [Canelo] fight was my motivation.
It would be crazy for a guy that started at 135 to come all the way up to 168, no catchweight, and dethrone you, so he’s got that in the back of his head. It’s a big risk for him.
Man. It’s something to talk about [retirement]. You know, there are things that we talk about. Right now I’m still doing what I do, Canelo has got a fight coming up so I never want to make it about me and Canelo.”
Whilst there is still an element of uncertainty surrounding Crawford’s next move, a fight with Canelo definitely remains of serious interest to the two weight undisputed champion.
