David Benavidez has cemented his place as one of the most fearsome fighters in boxing.
The 28-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona is a two-time WBC super middleweight champion, winning all 29 of his professional contests with 24 coming inside the scheduled distance.
‘The Monster’ made the move up to 175lbs last year when a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez did not materialise. Benavidez was the mandatory challenger to the Mexican’s WBC title at 168lbs for a period of time, but opted to make the move up in weight rather than continue to chase a showdown with Canelo.
Since beginning his campaign at light heavyweight, Benavidez has captured the WBC ‘interim’ title with a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June. The 28-year-old is set to return to the ring on February 1 in an intriguing battle against David Morrell, who is unbeaten in 11 contests.
Speaking on the Tobin Show, ‘The Monster’ discusses who he believes is the best current fighter in the world, naming unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk as who he thinks outshines the rest.
“The number one thing that makes Usyk the best fighter in the world, in my opinion, is his heart. He’s in there with giants bro, Usyk is not even that much bigger than me. He’s not buff, he’s not none of that, but his movement, his skill, his IQ, that just sets him apart.
He’s fought the best, he’s fought heavy hitters, he’s fought everything. His experience and his IQ and his heart just sets him apart from everybody.”
The Ukrainian superstar defeated Tyson Fury for the second time last month, cementing himself as the greatest heavyweight of this generation.
